Wedang Ronde (Glutinous rice balls in ginger water)

This 21 december 2012, my family had celebrated chinese festival as usual,it called Ko Ciet in our hakka languange or Dōngzhì in mandarin and winter soltice festival in english.

Ko Ciet  is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chinese and other East Asians during the Dongzhi solar term (winter solstice) on or around December 22 when sunshine is weakest and daylight shortest, and it occurs on Friday, December 21, 2012.

Our family follow it traditional activities and  make balls of glutinuous rice or "wedang ronde" in our languange. Usually wedang ronde are in ball shaped and brightly coloured, but this year i made some cat's paw, love, and rabbit shape in pastel colour :D,  So here the recipe

Wedang Ronde (Glutinous rice balls in ginger water) (Make 6 Portions):

Ingredients
For the rice balls:
200gr Glutineous rice fluor
160ml Warm water
50 gr Peanut, roast, and grind coarsely.
50 gr Sugar
Food coloring

For the ginger water :
1lt water
250 gr ginger, peel and crushed
5 pandan (screwpine) leaves, tied knot
200gr granulated sugar

To Finish :
Peanut roast
White bread, cubed

Method:

  1. For the ginger water and filling
In a pot boil water with ginger, pandan, and granulated sugar for 15 minutes until the spiciness aroma is infuse and quite strong. Sieve the ginger.
Mix ground peanut with sugar, set aside.
  1. For the rice balls
In a bowl, mix glutinous rice flour with water little by little kneading until the dough can be shaped, divide into 2-3 parts, each dyed a different colour. Form any shape you like, usually it shaped in little ball, but I make cat paw, rabbit and love shape.Fill in the peanut mixture.
  1. Boil plain water in a pot, cook the balls until they floating. Rinse with cold water. Drain
  2. Serve warm/hot ginger water with the glutineous balls and add some roasted peanut or cubed white bread.
Enjoy!
